PhD Scholarship: Next-Generation Latent Fingermark Detection Using Functional Nanomaterials

Supervisor: Prof. Claude Roux

Value and Duration: $37,082 pa (2018 rate, indexed) over three years, including an industry top-up of $10,000 pa.

Project Description: Interference from substrate chemistries and background luminescence is a major drawback of current fingermark detection methods. This project will address this issue through the development and validation of SiO2-based nanoparticles that have versatile surface modification abilities enabling the precise targeting of the fingermark secretion components. Their optical properties can also be tuned to meet optical requirements by introducing a luminescent dye, for example, in their inner structure. Moving away from traditional detection methods will deliver transformational outcomes for law enforcement as detection limits will be significantly improved and fingermarks that remain undetected with current techniques will be visualised for the first time.

The successful PhD candidate will be required to work closely with a post-doctoral fellow at UTS and in collaboration with a PhD student based at Western Sydney University (WSU). The researcher will be based at UTS; however, certain aspects of the project will require travel to the WSU facilities in Richmond.

The PhD candidate will contribute to the broader project through a focus on aspects related to the synthesis and characterisation of SiO2-based nanoparticles, with specific emphasis on optical and surface properties.

Selection criteria:

·          A degree in chemistry or forensic science, or in a field relevant to the project, and/or have research experience (including research publications) in a field such as analytical chemistry or forensic science.

·          Demonstrated excellent academic performance and the ability to work under minimum supervision.

·          Experience with and a thorough understanding of latent fingermark detection. Knowledge of and experience with nanoparticle-based detection methods and advanced luminescence detection techniques is highly desirable.

·          Experience working with industry and/or government agencies.

·          Excellent oral and written communication skills, including interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.

·          Ability to translate research results into published research outcomes.

·          Excellent time management skills to reach research deadlines.

·          International applicants must also demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the English language.
