Brief Bio

Professor Deb Kane,

Professor Kane received the B.Sc. Hons degree from Otago University, Dunedin, New Zealand in 1979 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of St Andrews, St Andrews, United Kingdom in 1983. She was a Research Fellow in Physics at Southampton University during 1984-86. She joined Massey University, Palmerston North, NZ as a lecturer in 1986 where she established the research area of semiconductor lasers and their application to atomic laser spectroscopy. She took up a lecturing position at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia in 1989. She is currently an Associate Professor at Macquarie University and Head of the Department of Physics. Her research interests include semiconductor optoelectronics and nanotechnology, laser cleaning, novel UV/VUV sources for surface treatments and other applications.

Professor Kane has published more than 170 research papers (60 journal papers), has 1 US patent, and has co-edited a book. She chaired the 4th International Workshop on Laser Cleaning and has served on the Programme Committees for NeToLAC and ACOLS. She has collaborated with researchers from five different countries and has current collaborations in the UK, Austria and Singapore. She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Women in Physics Group of the Australian Institute of Physics. In addition to her research and professional service she has lectured broadly in physics at all undergraduate levels and honours. She was a foundation lecturer in the Bachelor of Technology (Optoelectronics) degree at Macquarie University and Director of the BTech (Optoelectronics) program 1994-96. She has served on the University Research Committee and the Science and Technology Advisory Committee at Macquarie University. She has produced two video recordings on Physics and High technology for high schools.
