ARCNN News. Edition 6, February 2006

Welcome

Dear Members, welcome to the sixth edition of the ARCNN News, and the first one for the New Year!

The recent Bio Nano Conference and ECR/PhD Symposium in Brisbane in December were a good success. Preperation for the International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnolgy are proceeding well. More than 50 Symposia Chairs and Co-Chairs are actively working to create an exciting program for the conference. We have already got 4 confirmed high profile plenary speakers. Please keep an eye on the ICONN web site for updates. The ARCNN welcomes Liz Micallef who is the new Network Manager. Liz brings many years of finance and grants experience expertise and is quickly catching up on ARCNN activities. We farewelled Helen Mc Martin in January and this month we say farewell to Cindy Bradley the Network Administrator, who is leaving the ARCNN to pursue her Psychology degree full-time and we wish her all the very best of luck for the future. Ilona Krowlikowska will be taking over Cindy's position from February 16th. Many exciting activities are planned for 2006.

If you have not submitted an online profile, I would encourage you to do so as this provides a valuable resource for researchers seeking collaboration with people who have experience or expertise in a particular nanotechnology area. A search facility is provided on the Members Profiles webpage. Researchers looking to fill postdoc positions may also use the member database to locate students with research interests and experience in particular fields.

Overseas Travel Fellowships

Funding is now available for Postgraduate Students and Early Career Researchers to undertake research visits to collaborating overseas institutions. Five (5) Overseas Travel Fellowships valued at up to $5,000 each, will be offered every 6 months (closing dates in 2006 are 28 February and 31 August). Applications will be ranked and Fellowships awarded to the top 5 ranked applications. International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

ICONN 2006 will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre from 3 - 7 July 2006. The aim of the conference is to bring together the Australian and International community (students, scientists and engineers from academia, government laboratories, and industry) working in the field of nanoscale science and technology to discuss new and exciting advances in the field. Confirmed plenary speaker list and symposia chairs list is available on the ICONN web page. Please feel free to print it and post it on notice boards to draw the attention of the nanotechnology community to the conference. An Abstract submission template will be available on the web site in the week beginning 13th of February.

Distinguished Lecturer tour planned for February 2006

Professor Richard Kaner from the University of California will be visiting Australia from late Jan to mid Feb 2006. His research focus is on "Novel synthetic routes to new materials including nanowires and nanofibres". He will be giving talks in the following Universities

Monash University on Wednesday 22nd Feb
Univesity of Tasmania on Friday the 24th Feb

Young Science Ambassadors Program

ARCNN management committee approved funding to create a new program to encourage Ph.D. students to visit Schools in their states/territories to give talks on Nanotechnology to inspire students about this emerging field. Further details about this program will be posted soon on the ARCNN webpage.

International Journal of Nanotechnology: Special Issue on Nanotechnology in Australia

International Journal of Nanotechnology is planning to bring out a special issue on Nanotechnology in Australia. Guest editors for this Special Issue are C. Jagadish, Anita Hill(CSIRO) and Peter Majewski(UniSA). Special issue will feature invited papers as well as contributed papers and the deadline for submission of manuscripts is August 31 2006. All manuscripts will be refereed as per Journal guidelines. Please submit your manuscripts using the Journal, Template (available at ARCNN web page under LINK)
