ARCNN News. Edition 8, June 2006

Welcome

Dear Members, welcome to the eighth edition of the ARCNN News.

Congratulations to newly announced ARC Federation Fellows working in the field of Nanotechnology and related areas.  ARCNN membership has grown significantly in recent months with current membership exceeding 600.

ICONN 2006 is looking great with 4 short courses, 8 plenary talks, 25 invited talks, 270 contributed papers (oral + poster), 4 panel discussions.  To date we have 363 registrations. Conference Oral and
poster program is available on the ICONN 2006 web page (www.ausnano.net/iconn2006). You can customise your conference itenary on the  ICONN 2006 Attendee Planner Zone which is now available on this site.

We are planing to award 3 poster prizes (one year membership of American Association for Advancement of Science with digital subscription to Journal "Science", $200 and a certificate) on each of the poster session days (Tuesday and Thursday).

Update profiles, address changes etc

Please remember to advise address and email changes so that the ARCNN member database is kept up to date. Your current details can be checked on your online profile at http://www.ausnano.net/index.php?page=profiles.
If you have not submitted an online profile, I would encourage you to do so as this provides a valuable resource for researchers seeking collaboration with people who have experience or expertise in a particular nanotechnology area. A search facility is provided on the Members Profiles webpage. Researchers looking to fill postdoc positions may also use the member database to locate students with research interests and experience in particular fields.

International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

ICONN 2006 will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre from 3 - 7 July 2006.  Response of the community for ICONN 2006 has been fantastic and scientific program is looking exciting.  Conference will feature plenary talks followed by parallel sessions consisting of invited and oral presentations and two poster sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. On Monday short courses will be well attended with registrations ranging from 100-160 for each short course. A trade exhibition will be held and Victorian Govt. is offering wine tasting on Wednesday evening at their booth.  Please visit ARCNN booth to learn more about the Network and provide feedback on Network activities.

ARCNN Distinguished Lecturer Tours

Sir Professor Michael Pepper, FRS from Cambridge University will be visiting SYDNEY (University of New South Wales) on the 26th of June, CANBERRA (The Australian National University) on the 28th of June and MELBOURNE (University of Melbourne) on the 29th of June.  His area of expertise is Electron transport properties of low dimensional systems.Lecture Times and Locations can be found at   http://www.ausnano.net/content/dl-mike_pepper/

Professor Henry Smith from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will be visiting SYDNEY (University of New South Wales) on the 26th of June, MELBOURNE (University of Melbourne) on the 28th of June and CANBERRA on the 29th of June. Professor Heinrich Hofmann, EPFL, Lausanne will be visiting CANBERRA (The Australian National University) on the 10th of July, MELBOURNE(University of Melbourne) on the 12th of July, and ADELAIDE (University of South Australia) on the 13th of July. His area of expertise includes the synthesis of nanostructured materials based on nanoparticles using colloidal methods and their application in drug delivery and medical imaging. ICONN Cutting Edge Research in Nanomaterials and BioNanoChem for publishing in the Australian Journal of Chemistry

Some of the best research presented at ICONN will be published in two separate issues of AJC as Research Fronts to be Guest Edited by Paul Mulvaney (Nanomaterials) and Frank Caruso (BioNanoChem). A Research Front is a cluster of papers in a rapidly developing or topical area (the March issue of AJC contains a Research Front on Light-Driven Molecular Machines - see http://www.publish.csiro.au/nid/52/issue/1357.htm - also on display at the ARCNN stand at the conference). The Research Front acts as a forum that allows readers to get an overview as well as a snapshot of current research directions, and allows authors to publish alongside their international peers and/or competitors. International Journal of Nanotechnology: Special Issue on Nanotechnology in Australia

International Journal of Nanotechnology is planning to bring out a special issue on Nanotechnology in Australia. Guest editors for this Special Issue are C. Jagadish, Anita Hill(CSIRO) and Peter Majewski(UniSA). Special issue will feature invited papers as well as contributed papers and the deadline for submission of manuscripts is August 31 2006. All manuscripts will be refereed as per Journal guidelines. IEEE Nanotechnology Council Awards-Call for Nominations

The IEEE Nanotechnology Council is calling for nominations for 3 awards to be presented at IEEE NANO 2007 in Hong Kong. All nomination material including reference letters should reach the NTC awards committee by October 15 2006.
