Nanotechnology Research Programs/Activities:

1. Nanoparticle – polymer composite material characterisation for optical device fabrications: Applications to high-density optical data storage and functional photonic crystals.
2. Scanning near-field optical microscopy under focused total internal reflection condition: to study orientation and fluorescence dynamics of a single nanoparticle system and its interaction with light in nanometer scale.
3. Optical far-field nanoscopy under two-photon illumination: Optical nanoscopic tool for nanoparticles.

Scale of Nanotechnology Research Effort:

No. of people: Total 11: 1 professor (Prof. M. Gu), 2 academic staff (Drs Xiaosong Gan and James W. M. Chon), 2 research fellows (Drs Guangyong Zhou and a new chemist), 4 PhD students (Mr Djenan Ganic, Dru Morrish, Ms Smitha Kuriakose and Bao Hua Jia) , 1 administrative staff (Ms Benita Hutchinson-Reade), and 1 technical supporting staff (Mr Mark Kivinen).

Annual Budget: 300k/yr on salary, 200k/yr on research funding (Including fundings from NanoVIC) for 3 – 5 years.
