Nanotechnology Research Programs/Activities:

• Multiscale modelling of strength and plasticity, with a special emphasis on nanostructured materials. The models cover processes at dislocation scale and individual subgrain/grain scale, as well as continuum formulations using microstructural variables.
• Developing models of the deformation processes leading to extreme grain refinement by severe plastic deformation, thus providing a platform for process optimisation. Applications of such models include simulations of equal channel angular pressing, high pressure torsion, impact of particles, etc.
• Developing bulk nanomaterials which can be used for structural applications, particularly in surgical implants and micro electromechanical systems (MEMS). The aim is to produce bulk metallic materials with the grain size in the 100 nm range and below by specially designed techniques utilising severe plastic deformation. The benefits of these techniques are (i) large throughput, (ii) hazard-free production not involving handling of loose nanoparticles and (iii) superior mechanical properties of the product.
