Nanotechnology Research Programs/Activities:
At GNS, nanotechnology programmes are running since 1999. The initiatives started with research on silicon nanowhiskers grown by electron bam annealing. 5 patent applications have been submitted over the years. After having clarified the growth mechanism, research is now focused on the utilization of field emission for prototypes in portable X-ray and electron sources. Since 2001, the research also includes the fabrication of silicon carbide nanoboulders on silicon by ion implantation and electron beam annealing. Additional effort has been devoted to new zinc oxide materials. Currently GNS runs 3 nanotechnology programmes funded by FRST, the Royal Society and GNS.
