Current Research Activities

Recent interest in titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructure has been driven by the excellent photocatalytic and optical properties exhibited by the anatase and rutile phases of TiO2. This article highlights the relationship between experimental synthetic parameters and the resultant TiO2 product. By making use of a diffusion-controlled model incorporating the solvent vapour-pressure, it is demonstrated that it is possible to predict and control the phase, size and type of nanostructure of the solvothermal product. This control has made it possible for the systematic synthesis of TiO2 nanostructures by controlling parameters such as solvent chain length, reaction temperature and time and the addition of surfactants. Each of these variants has been found to play a distinct role in the synthetic mechanism and due variance of these parameters provides the ability to design and tailor the TiO2 nanostructure, which will be vital for the optimal application of the nanostructures in photocatalytic or optical applications.
