Current Research Activities

My research focuses in the areas of applied ethics (especially bioethics) and political philosophy.I currently hold an ARC Discovery Grant on bioethics, democracy and regulation, 'Big Picture Bioethics: policy-making and liberal democracy' (CIs: S. Dodds, R. A. Ankeny, J. Grossman, F. Baylis and J. G. Downie). Recent publications include work on research ethics, commodification of health and human capacities and the ethical significance of human embryonic stem cell research and embryo research regulation. I have co-authored two governed commissioned reports on ethical review of research involving human participants.

Existing Linkages

My current work on bioethics and democracy is in collaboration with the University of Sydney and Dalhousie University (Canada). I also have well-developed Canadian linkages with the University of British Columbia and University of Toronto. Since 1992 I have been a member of the Advisory Board of the International Network on Feminist Approachs to Bioethics (FAB) and am currently serving my second term as a co-coordinator of FAB. I am also a member of the Board of the International Association of Bioethics. These two organisations have memberships across the globe and involve active research collaborations with a wide range of researchers in bioethics. Within Australia, I have collaborated with colleagues at the Australian National University, Monash University, University of Adelaide, Macquarie University and the University of Tasmania.
